Capital coach savors this moral victory

Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.儲存M.Oct. 06--There were no emphatic chest bumps, no raucous celebration, in fact, there was no post-game cheer at all.A visibly agitated St. Michael's coach Joey Fernandez gathered his squad after Saturday's contest at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex, challenging them to do better -- all thanks to Capital, a team the Horsemen were supposed to easily handle.St. Mike's is the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A, winners of 19 straight games, while the Jaguars are a squad of predominately underclassmen in a program that has had more coaches than wins in recent years. But through the first half, just 13 points separated the squads. While the Horsemen would close the game with 27 second-half points for a 40-7 victory, the final margin was much closer than the score indicated."We didn't have a good week of practice -- we were overlooking them a little bit," Fernandez said. "And I think Capital sent a message to us that we can't come out like this and expect to win -- teams are out to get us."... Capital came out excited and motivated. For as many young kids as they have, they looked like a football team."And while Jaguars coach Bill Moon has said on more than one occasion that he has little appreciation for so-called moral victories -- in this case, he'll make an exception."Overall I thought this was a great game, and I told my guys: 'There are only three games in a loss that I was proud of my team, and this was one of them,' " Moon said. "We never lost our composure."But it's also a tradition that we score on St. Mike's. We had three points last year."Capital's six-play, 80-yard touchdown drive with 6:02 left in regulation snapped the Horsemen's streak of 13 scoreless quarters, dating back to the second quarter of their 35-6 win over Lovington on Sept. 13. Sophomore quarterback Augustine Larranaga hit Daniel Gavin儲存倉in the end zone from 2 yards out for the score. The touchdown pass was set up by a 53-yard run by Manny Segura, who had six carries for minus-7 yards prior to that run."I think that was a metaphor for this game: We kept moving our feet and we kept charging," Moon said. "... Now hopefully it will become a metaphor for our program."Capital still leads the series 13-9, and in two stints with the Jaguars (1988-96 and 2012-13), Moon is 6-2 against St. Mike's.St. Mike's used three quarterbacks in the first half -- sophomore Isaac Chavez, freshman Chross Jaramillo and junior Julio Caesar Garcia -- who combined to go 5-for-9 passing for 78 yards and one interception. The Horsemen's troika of backup signal callers also lost a fumble on their opening series.St. Mikes regrouped on its next possession, marching 65 yards upfield for the score. Armando Blea put the Horsemen up 7-0 with an 8-yard touchdown run. St. Mike's offense then stalled on its ensuing three possessions, including a turnover -- an interception by Segura -- before reaching the end zone with 42 seconds left before the half. Daniel Ortega capped off a three-play, 48-yard drive with a 31-yard scoring run. Keith Dominguez -- St. Mike's usual starting quarterback -- played the entire second half and wasted little time by hitting a wide-open Isaiah Dominguez in stride for a 68-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the third quarter. And on its next possession, St. Mike's went up 27-0 on a 73-yard run by Ortega, who added one more score by the end of the third quarter on a 4-yard run. Then after Capital's touchdown, Isaiah Dominguez took the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to the end zone to conclude the scoring.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)
