Defenses figure to be tested in PI-Lyford
Source: Valley Morning Star, Harlingen, TexasSept.迷你倉 06--It's not often a quarter-back accounts for 633 total yards and loses, but that's exactly what happened to Lyford senior Scot Arnold last week. The Bulldogs' defense missed tackle after tackle, allowing Brownville St. Joseph to rack up 64 points, in turn nullifying Arnold's big day.Lyford coach Jaime Infante feels cleaning up that sloppy defensive play will be paramount for the Bulldogs, who head to the bay to take on No. 4 Port Isabel (1-0) tonight at 7:30 at Tarpon Stadium in Port Isabel."I wasn't happy and the staff wasn't happy with the way we tackled on Friday," Infante said. "It's some-thing we better take care of because I think Port Isabel is tougher to tackle than St. Joe was."Port Isabel ran over, around and through the Brownsville Veterans Memorial defense to the tune of 475 yards on 25 rushing attempts last week, good for 19 yards per carry.Quarterback Isaiah Martinez (6-105) and tailbacks Jacob Losoya (10-138) and Jaime Gonzalez (5-133) each cracked the 100-yard mark while another Tarpon, Juan Aguilera (2-96) finished just four yards short."I think a lot it is just the pride the kids take in running the football," Port Isabel coach Monty Stumbaugh said. "That's what we do. Our offensive line came off the ball well last week. They got a good push and our backs were able to find some holes and hit the creases."Lyford's young defense could be in for a long night trying to contain the Mighty Tarpons' rushing attack, but Port Isabel's defense might have their hands full as well.Lyford's air-raid offense moved the ball with ease in Week Zero, and being a power儲存倉I team, Port Isabel can't truly replicate the Bulldogs' aerial attack in practice."Not as many people pass as much as we do down here so that definitely helps us out, but Port Isabel has great athletes either way," Arnold said. "They're going to find a way to adjust. Hopefully, not enough."Port Isabel senior defensive end/tight end Jacques Guillot feels getting pres-sure on Arnold will be the key to styming Lyford's offense."We have to get a good pass rush," Guillot said. "We take pride in getting sacks so that's what we're going to do this week."Those pass rushers better be aware of Arnold's scrambling ability, how-ever.Arnold picked up a district-best 186 yards rushing last week. None of the yards came on designed runs. They were all on scrambles after the play broke down."Scot had always been a running threat," Infante said. "I think when defenses bail on us and give A and B gap escapes like they did we need to take advantage of it. It's some-thing we don't encourage Scot to do much of, but he certainly has the green light to do it whenever it's there."Lyford has lost to Port Isabel the last three times they've played, including twice last season, once in non-district and then again in the playoffs.Arnold vividly remembers having his season end at the hands of the Tarpons in the bi-district round of the playoffs last year."That was a tough one," Arnold said. "We're hoping to get some payback on that."I get chills just thinking about it."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, Texas) Visit Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, Texas) at .valleymorningstar.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉價錢
